Postcolonial Nonhuman Blurring (B)orders in Migrant Ecologies: A Postanthropocentric Reading of Amitav Ghosh’s "Gun Island"

Amitav Ghosh’s novel Gun Island (2019) explores the intersection of nonhuman with 21st century issues pertaining to racial and ecological injustice, ethnic cleansing, environmental catastrophe migrant ecologies by way allegorising myth Manasa Devi (goddess snakes other venomous creatures). A postcolonial ecocritical lens helps analyse how novelist presents actors contest Western anthropocentric conceptualisations human subjectivity shaped historical forces modernity. By positing a postanthropocentric reading world in order shape new subjectivities which do not efface human-nonhuman entanglements, my paper studies Ghosh recognises agentic capacities storied matter subject identifying novel’s subversive negotiations through tropes language, embodiment, genre, everyday environmentalism. I contextualisation only critiques exceptionalism but destabilises constructedness borders terms an immaterial projecting otherworldly possibility, trans-corporeality inescapable interconnectedness between humans all living non-living matter, environmentalism broadening definition environment nature-culture dualism. also argue that this ecofiction’s allegorisation Devi’s unseen boundaries she seeks retain problematise simplistic understanding as limiting. My thus analyses reconceptualisation blurs their ordering posits, instead, relational dismantles hierarchies while paying heed (b)orders for sustainable living.
